French Voters Head to the Polls for Second Round of Elections
Candidates Drop Out, Call for Unity Against Far-Right
In a surprising turn of events, a number of candidates in three-way races across France have dropped out and called for unity against the far-right candidate, Marine Le Pen. The move comes as polls suggest that Le Pen could be poised to make a strong showing in the second round of elections, which will be held on June 19th.
The parliamentary election, which was called by President Emmanuel Macron in an attempt to shore up his support, has been seen as a referendum on his presidency. Macron's party, La République En Marche!, is facing a challenge from both the left and the right, with Le Pen's far-right National Rally party polling strongly.
The results of the first round of voting, which was held on June 12th, saw Le Pen's party come in first place, with 23.1% of the vote. Macron's party came in second place, with 20.8% of the vote, followed by the left-wing alliance, the New Popular Front, with 20.1% of the vote. With no party coming close to winning a majority of seats in the National Assembly, the second round of voting will be crucial in determining who will control the French parliament.
