French Voters Keep Far Right Out of Power Again in Parliamentary Elections
On Sunday night, joy: French voters had once again kept the far right out of power.
French voters returned to the polls on Sunday, June 30, three weeks after President Emmanuel Macron surprised the nation by calling snap elections. The results were a relief for many, as the far-right National Rally (RN) party failed to make significant gains.
Leaders of France's far-right National Rally tried to put a brave face on projected results from parliamentary elections that showed their party winning just 32% of the vote - 37% with their right-wing allies - but for more than 10 million voters, a taboo has been broken. In Meaux, east of Paris, RN took a parliamentary seat for the first time.
